“Vegan is a word for a person who is not meat eaters, so that’s not vegan,” says Lila.
“But I think the word is in danger of becoming a slur because of the stigma it carries.”
While the word’s history has been filled with vegetarianism and veganism, many people are now calling it a label for people who have a “lifestyle of meat.”
But while it may seem like a bad thing to call someone a vegan, Lila says it can be an opportunity to “give a voice to people who don’t have one.”
“There’s so much work to do in terms of building up communities of people who are vegan-minded and who are interested in the vegan experience, and who want to support others who are in a similar position.”
